Name of the newspaper or magazine where you found the article: CNN Date of publication: 1/19/18 Name of article: “Woman who started France’s #MeToo campaign faces lawsuit by man she accused.” Author of article: Yelena Peigne and James Masters Who is the article about, or who is the event about?: This article is about a French journalist named Sandra Muller being sued by a man named Eric Brion who allegedly sexually harassed her. Sandra Muller is the creator of France’s #MeToo campaign which is a campaign made for girls to share their sexual harassment experiences on social platforms. Eric Brion is a senior French television producer that had made a comment about her body. Summarize in your own words the current event: Sandra Muller is the creator of France’s #MeToo or #balenctonporc (meaning squeal your pig in French which also means to share your story) campaign which is to let girls or boys express themselves and their experiences to the world about sexual harassment. Eric Brion is a senior French television producer that Muller accuses of making remarks about her body. Muller is facing a lawsuit by Brion for defamation because Muller made a statement on social media about her sexual harassment in the workplace. Brion admitted to the comment he made about her but claims he was slightly drunk and “only did it once”. Muller’s lawyer says: "Of course, there was no work relationship between my client and Eric at the time, but since they were at a work event when everything happened, it can still be considered as sexual harassment in the workplace." Muller took to social media and wrote: "From the highest levels of the state, to feminist associations, philosophers, intellectuals and members of civil society, many personalities have lent their support to this movement, underlining the need to alert and to act against this type of aggression." It is not yet known who won the lawsuit and Brion’s legal representatives refuse to share more information about the case for the time being. Where did this event happen?: This event took place in France. When did this event happen?: I couldn't find when this exact event took place or when Brian announced that he was suing Muller. Why did this event happen?: There isn’t just one answer to why this happens because there are different cases of the same issue that happens to males and females across the world. It was in 1964 when Title VII of The Civil Rights Act prohibited sex discrimination in the workplace but it wasn’t until sexual harassment was given its name in 1975 by Cornell University activists. It’s been a named problem for about 54 years but it's been around for much longer. In the U.S. during 2017, about 60 public figures (people who worked in sports, TV, movies, and politics) were accused of sexual harassment, though that number seems small, the victims were deeply affected by the actions of those accused and their lives were changed. What is your opinion about this event?: I think that the #MeToo campaign needs to be supported so that victims have a platform to share their experiences on. There’s a lot of people talking about the topic of sexual harassment and I’ve found that a lot of other public figures have used their platform to shine a light on the problems that have occurred not only in France but as well as the U.S.. I think that the word “feminist” can be scary to some people and I know a lot of girls that don’t consider themselves feminists because other people view the term negatively. In reality, feminism is for everyone. It’s for women and men that’s been sexually abused, it’s for equality and it’s for change. The #MeToo campaign is an act of feminism because it stands for respect and equality. It’s necessary and it matters.
