During the entirety of this World's Fair project, my group members and I represented San Francisco. By the end of the project we all had a jukebox, our own essays covering the appeal of San Francisco and a new found knowledge about the state. The World's Fair was a display of inventions that originated in different countries throughout the rest of the world. This essay will be a reflection on the exhibition and the assignment as a whole.
One of the many things that I learned about San Francisco was that before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, in 1930 there were ferries to take people from San Francisco to Sausalito. I learned this when we were writing our essays. I wanted to find 3 things that stuck out to me about San Francisco that I could form my body paragraphs around and I found the history of ferries very interesting. It was also fascinating to see the comparison between forms of transportation then versus today. The item we recreated was the jukebox which was invented by Louis Glass and William S. in 1820. We chose this item because we thought the jukebox had an interesting background. I am very glad we chose this item because I like the way jukeboxes look and sound however, a lot of things went wrong during the building process and we didn't end up with the quality of work I thought we could've managed. The top part of our jukebox was not finished because the laser cutter broke the day the piece we needed was supposed to be cut.
The process was difficult, I feel that at times I wasn't getting as much help as I needed from my group members and I also don't think we started early enough to perfect our final product. The body of the jukebox started with me creating the Adobe Illustrator files that needed to be cut out using the laser cutter. After I was almost finished with the complete file that we needed, the software crashed and I had to start again. After the files were finally done, we were able to get the pieces we needed and were able to bond them together. This was also difficult because some of the pieces had trouble bonding.
I would like to learn more about Chicago which is where the first Ferris wheel was invented because I think they had most popular booth. I saw everyone in that group working as hard as possible everyday and collaborating with one another the way a group should. Their hard work paid off because their outcome was incredible and very impressive! I feel proud of my contribution to the product, booth and overall participation because I know that I did all I could. It was mostly me and one other person doing all of the building and the talking during exhibition so it wouldn't be fair for me to say that everyone in the group has been sharing the work fairly. Before the exhibition, I planned to continue working on the jukebox to improve it but it was thrown away. As far as the general exhibition goes, I believe i ran smoothly and we were able to persuade quite a few people to either visit or live in San Francisco.
In conclusion, the exhibition provided a great experience for me and allowed me to learn more about a state that I visited and loved immediately. I had my share of challenges from the start to the end of the project but I'm happy I was able to work things out in the end with the help of my teacher and other group member. The exhibition was the most fun for me because it was my chance to share all that I learned. I hope I get a chance to learn more about a place in depth like I did during this exhibition very soon!
